The Kings of Bhutan have provided unprecedented leadership, bringing the country forward through a century of change and development. This legacy of leadership continues to bless and inspire the country and its people.
Establishing a premier institute in the country for governance and strategic studies is both the vision and personal initiative of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the fifth King of Bhutan. It reflects the paramount importance His Majesty attaches to the development of the intellectual capacity of our leaders and the promotion of good governance in the country. In His Royal Address during the closing ceremony of the 10th session of the First Parliament of Bhutan, His Majesty the King had said “I pray that good governance becomes the means to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of our people, reinforce the security and sovereignty of our country and foster the prosperity of our people.”
The Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies (RIGSS) was established, with generous financial assistance from the Government of India, to provide a much needed forum to train leaders from various sectors in all major areas of governance and nation-building. It provides high-quality education and discourse on public policies, leadership and strategic management. RIGSS offers a unique opportunity for different leaders to come together, discuss real-life issues facing the country and generate ideas that provide solutions to the problems we face as a small, vulnerable society. As a home-grown institute RIGSS has the edge in terms of consolidating globally relevant concepts with traditional knowledge and value-systems and ground realties at home.
RIGSS is an autonomous Institute with His Majesty The King as the Royal Patron as well as the Chairman of the Institute’s Governing Board. The Institute is housed in the magnificent Bhutan India Friendship Association (BIFA) building in Phuentsholing, with the historical Kharbandi Hotel fully refurbished as hostel for students.
Though in its formative years, RIGSS is already seen as setting a high standard. Faculty recruitment, curriculum development, institutional amenities and student selection are so designed that RIGSS promote an ambience for healthy discourse, discipline and diversity in the teaching-learning process that is truly world-class.
RIGSS was inaugurated on 10th October 2013 by His Majesty the King, and the inaugural four-week Senior Executive Leadership Program was launched on 21st October 2013.
